Ducting & Insulation 101: Choosing the Right Material for UAE Climate

Ductwork and insulation don't get the attention compressors and refrigerants do, but poor duct sizing or inadequate insulation is one of the most common causes of underperforming AC systems — the compressor and coils can be perfectly sized and still deliver poor comfort if the ducting loses cooling along the way.

Flexible vs Rigid Ducting

Flexible ducting (insulated flex duct) is faster to install, easier to route around obstacles, and standard for most residential and light-commercial branch runs. Rigid ductwork (sheet metal, typically pre-insulated or externally wrapped) offers better airflow efficiency over long runs and is preferred for main trunk lines and larger commercial installations where airflow volume and static pressure matter more.

Why Insulation Matters More in the UAE

With ambient temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C in summer, any gap in insulation on ductwork running through a hot roof space or unconditioned area causes real cooling loss before the air even reaches the room — and condensation risk on cold duct surfaces if insulation is missing or damaged. This isn't a minor efficiency detail here; it's often the difference between a system that performs to spec and one that doesn't, regardless of how well the AC unit itself was sized.

Elastomeric Insulation

Closed-cell elastomeric foam insulation (the type Aerofoam supplies) is the standard choice for refrigerant lines, chilled water piping, and ductwork in this climate — it resists moisture absorption, which matters because wet insulation loses most of its insulating value and becomes a condensation and mold risk. Key specification points:

• Thickness — thicker insulation is needed for larger pipe/duct diameters and colder line temperatures; undersized insulation thickness is a common design error.
• Thermal conductivity (k-value) — lower is better; check the manufacturer's datasheet rather than assuming all elastomeric foam performs identically.
• Fire rating — confirm the insulation meets UAE Civil Defence fire safety requirements for the building type before specifying.

Common Ducting Mistakes

• Undersized ducts causing high static pressure, reduced airflow, and increased compressor strain
• Sharp bends or kinks in flexible ducting that restrict airflow well below rated capacity
• Unsealed joints and seams leaking conditioned air into unconditioned spaces
• Insulation gaps at joints, hangers, or penetrations — a small gap causes disproportionate heat gain
