Refrigerant Gases Explained: R410A, R22 & R134A

Not every refrigerant is interchangeable, and using the wrong one — or mixing types in a single system — can damage a compressor, void a warranty, or create an unsafe over-pressure condition. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the three refrigerants we stock most, and what to consider when sourcing gas for a job.

R410A — The Current Standard for Residential & Light Commercial AC

R410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend and the mainstream refrigerant for split and ducted air conditioning systems manufactured over roughly the last two decades. It operates at higher pressure than the older R22 it replaced, so R410A systems require components (compressors, line sets, gauges) rated specifically for it — R410A must never be charged into equipment designed for R22. It contains no chlorine, meaning it doesn't contribute to ozone depletion, though as an HFC it does carry a global warming potential that is factored into regional F-gas and refrigerant regulations.

R22 — Legacy Refrigerant, Being Phased Down

R22 is an HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerant that was the residential and commercial AC standard before R410A. Under the Montreal Protocol, HCFCs are being phased down globally on a schedule that varies by country classification, with production and import progressively restricted. In practice this means R22 remains available for servicing existing older systems, but it is no longer used in new equipment, supply is tightening, and per-kilo cost trends upward as the phase-down progresses. If you're maintaining a legacy R22 system, it's worth discussing a retrofit or replacement timeline with the client rather than assuming long-term gas availability. Always check current import and handling rules with UAE authorities, as phase-down schedules are periodically updated.

R134A — Different Use Case, Not a Drop-In for AC

R134A is an HFC most commonly used in automotive air conditioning, commercial refrigeration (chillers, cold rooms, display cabinets) and some water-cooled/chiller applications — not in typical split AC systems, which run on R410A. It shouldn't be substituted into equipment designed for another refrigerant type; the pressure-temperature characteristics differ enough to affect performance and safety.

Handling & Storage Best Practices

• Store cylinders upright, secured against falling, and away from direct heat sources or sustained sun exposure — pressure rises with temperature.
• Never mix refrigerant types in the same cylinder or recovery tank — cross-contamination makes the charge unusable and can misrepresent system pressures during diagnosis.
• Use a refrigerant scale when charging; charging "by feel" or pressure alone on modern variable-charge systems risks under- or over-charging.
• Recover, don't vent. Use a recovery machine and dispose of or recycle recovered refrigerant through proper channels rather than releasing it to atmosphere.
• Only certified technicians should handle refrigerant charging, recovery and system evacuation — this is standard practice across the UAE for both safety and equipment warranty compliance.
